How to place an exchanged link

Updated

You agreed on a link exchange; now it is time to place the link. Where you put it and how you write it decides whether it helps your visitors, your partner and both your sites.

Where to put the link

  • Best: in your content. An article or page where the partner site is genuinely relevant, with a sentence about why it is worth a visit.
  • Good: a short resources page. A page like “Useful sites for dog owners” with a handful of related links, each with a line of description.
  • Avoid: footers and sitewide links. A link on every page looks like a traded link, and search engines treat it that way.
  • Avoid: long link pages. A page with hundreds of unrelated links helps nobody.

What to write

Use the site's name, or a plain description of what it offers, as the link text. For example:

<a href="https://www.example.com/">Example Garden Supplies</a>, seeds and tools for vegetable gardens

Do not use the same exact keyword for every link (“cheap garden tools”): that pattern is a classic sign of link building, and it reads badly.

Make sure the link can be found

  • Put the link on a page that is linked from your own site, for example from your menu or from another page. Linkorado checks the page you give us and the path to it.
  • Do not block that page in robots.txt, and do not put it behind a login.
  • Use a normal HTML link. Links that only appear through JavaScript, or inside images without a link, may not be found.

Tell Linkorado where it is

On your account page, choose Get link details (or Get back link details when you are linking back) and enter the address of the page with the link. Linkorado checks the page and lets your partner know. When both links are found, the exchange is complete.

Keep it there

Linkorado keeps checking both links after the exchange is complete. If you redesign your site, take the partner links along to the new pages.
